You Are a Living System,
Not a Machine
Most leadership development treats people like machines to be optimized. Better habits. Better systems. Better performance.
Growth Rings takes a different view.
Like a tree, you are a living organism shaped over time by what you've inherited, what you've endured, what you've protected, and what you are still becoming.
This work is not about fixing what is wrong. It is about understanding your whole system, and creating the conditions for natural, sustainable growth.
The Growth Rings Framework
Roots. Rings. Sap. Bark. Reach. Fruit.
A living system of leadership development.
Growth Rings is made up of five interconnected domains.
They are not separate problems to solve.
They are aspects of one living system.
When you tend one domain, the whole tree changes.
Roots represent what you inherited. Your family system. Intergenerational patterns. The unseen beliefs and burdens that shaped your relationship with power, success, conflict, or belonging.
Roots are where nourishment comes from. And sometimes, where drain begins.
Tree Element: Root System
Roots
What did I inherit that serves me?
What am I carrying that was never mine to hold?
Rings hold your story. Wide rings from years of expansion. Narrow rings from years of stress. They represent the parts of you that developed across different chapters of life often to protect you, often to survive.
Tree Element: Growth Rings
Rings
How is my history still shaping my present reactions, decisions, and relationships?
Sap
Sap is your life energy. Your nervous system state. Your capacity for regulation. Your ability to stay present under pressure.
Without healthy sap flow, everything becomes harder. A dysregulated leader cannot access wisdom, receive feedback, or connect authentically.
This is why the work often begins here. Breath is one of the most direct doorways back into regulation and steadiness.
Tree Element: Fluid of Life
How aware am I of my body's signals throughout the day?
Can I regulate myself when I get activated?
Can I stay present under pressure, or do I get hijacked?
Bark is how you protect yourself. What you show the world. What you keep hidden. The defenses that once helped you function, achieve, or survive.
Sometimes bark becomes too thick, rigid, impenetrable. Sometimes too thin, leaving you exposed.
Bark
Tree Element: Protective Layer
Are my protective patterns still serving me, or limiting my growth?
Reach
Reach represents your relational world. The structure of the connections you've built, and the living exchange happening within them.
Some branches are strong. Some are brittle. Some have been neglected.
Tree Element: Branches and Leaves
How present am I in my relationships?
Can I both give and receive?
Where is connection asking to be restored?
Fruit is your contribution. What you are producing now, and whether it aligns with who you truly are. It is also legacy forward, what you are seeding that will outlast you.
Fruit cannot be forced. It emerges naturally when the whole system is tended.
Tree Element: Fruit and Seeds
Fruit
Does my life reflect my values?
What am I here to bring into the world?
Not Optimization. Integration
Growth Rings is different because it is not motivational content. It is not performance coaching. It is not about fixing a machine.
It is grounded in psychology, nervous system awareness, family systems, and lived experience.
It invites both/and thinking:
That which protected you… and may now be limiting you.
Your family gave you gifts… and burdens.
Your history shaped you… and does not have to define you.
This work is meant to be lived, not just understood.
